Weekly Update 2007-08

 

Spring Recap

Tennis:  The Boys and Girls Tennis teams swept the AAAA State Championships at the Clayton International Park.  The Boys team captured their 3rd consecutive AAAA State Championship finishing with a record of 21-3 with two of their loses coming against AAAAA State Champion Northview.  The Boys defeated St. Pius 3-0 in the semi-finals then beat Marist 3-0 in the finals.  The Girls team finished as region runner-up during the regular season but played some of their best tennis in the state tournament to capture the AAAA Girl’s title.  The Lady War Eagles defeated rival Marist 3-0 in the semi-finals before beating McIntosh in the championship match 3-1.

Golf:  The Girls Golf team sent shock waves through the Georgia golf community by pulling off the biggest upset in girl's golf 12 year existence. The Woodward team of Seniors Kathleen Berman and Laurie King, Junior Felicity Lloyd-Jones, Sophomore Chloe Bootstaylor, and Freshman Haley Zagoria did the unthinkable and defeated the 16 team field with a one stroke victory over co-favorite Ware Co. The War Eagles fired their best round of the season (166) with each team member carding their personal best. Laurie King and Haley Zagoria lead the team with co-low medalist honors (83). After finishing a distant 2nd in the region to co-state favorite Whitewater, the girls took a business like approach and used their depth to bring home the AAAA title.

Track & Field:  Woodward Academy's Boys Track and Field team won the Region 2-AAAA Championship at the Woodward Track Complex. Woodward would enter the 4x400 Relay trailing leader McIntosh by 4 points. In their best time of the season, 3:25.11, the 4x400 team of Zach Castellano, Emanuel Jones, Jamal Paige, and Justin Watkins placed 2nd to qualify for the state meet and secure Woodward's first boys track region championship in 10 years. Congratulations to the 8 boys who qualified for state: Drew Phillips, Nathan Vassey, Zach Castellano, Emanuel Jones, Jamal Paige, Justin Watkins, Jay Porterfield, and Juwan Thompson.

Soccer:  The Varsity Girls Soccer team had another exceptional season advancing to the AAAA State Semi-finals.  The Lady War Eagles would lose to St. Pius in the semi-final match. Woodward held the lead for much of the match until St.Pius tied the score at 1-1 with three minutes remaining. The winner would finally be determined in a penalty kick shootout with St. Pius winning 5 to 4. Congratulations to the Lady War Eagles on a great season!

Baseball:  The War Eagles were the regular season Region Champions with an exceptional 22-3 record and have continued their strong play into the State Playoffs.  Woodward has now advanced to the quarterfinals against Sequoyah.  In round two Woodward swept Thomas County Central in two games.  The War Eagles won the first game 6-3 with Andrew Cadger recording the win on the mound. Corey Betterson delivered a 3 run homer in the second inning and Andrew Cadger went 2-4 with two doubles while Brennan May went 2-3 with a double. In the second game, Will Madden was the pitcher of record in the 14-8 win. Delino Deshields led the offense going 3-4 with three homers, Tommy Corbin went 2-3 with a homer, Brennan May went 2-4 with a homer, and Corey Betterson added a 3 run homer.

 

 

2007-2008 Weekly Update

 

The Week of August 20th – August 25th

 

Softball:  The Lady War Eagles opened up the 2007 season by traveling to Columbus, GA for the annual Jordan Hare Invitational.  Unfortunately, poor weather conditions would limit the tournament to just one day.  Woodward would fall to Berrian (2-0), Shaw (5-2) and Northside (3-1) before beating Columbus (5-4).  The Lady War Eagles would capture 3rd place overall.  During the week, Woodward would take on a tough Whitewater squad losing 4-0 before having the remainder of the week’s games cancelled due to rain and lightning.

Volleyball:  The Lady War Eagle Volleyball squad kicked off the 2007 with one of the toughest week long schedules in school history.  First, Woodward would play host to Marist, 2006 AAAA State Champion, and Landmark Christian.  The Lady War Eagles would fall to Marist 2-1 but would rebound to beat a talented Landmark Christian team 2-0.  Next up was a trip to Starr’s Mill to face the Panthers as well as a very talented team from Columbus.  Woodward would fall in both matches 2-0. Finally, the Lady War Eagles hosted some of the best teams in the state in a six team play date.  St. Pius, Northview, McIntosh, Columbus and Jonesboro would visit Woodward with the Lady War Eagles finishing 1-4 on the day.

Cross Country:  The Boys Cross Country team finished 11th out of 20 teams at the Early Bird Invitational. The team's top three runners were Andrew Lauer (16:55), Nathan Vassey (17:03), and Chris Pryor (17:23). Carter Richardson, Nick Widener, Kevin Lovinger, and Mathew Greer rounded out the top seven.

The Girls Cross Country team placed 4th out of 19 teams at the Early Bird Invitational, finishing as the top AAAA team at the meet.  Leading the team for the War Eagles was Jennifer Rubel who placed 7th overall in the meet with a new personal record time of 19:55.9 for the 5k course.  Other personal records from the varsity race included Mallery Aiken (20:55.3) and Whitney Davis (21:30.0).  Both teams next compete in Carrollton on September 8.

 

The Week of August 27th – September 1st

Volleyball:  After a tough 2-7 start in their first week of competition, the Lady War Eagles played well this past weekend in Huntsville, AL.  Woodward finished the weekend with a 5-3 record, with the three losses coming from the tournament champion (Grissom), tournament runner-up (Bob Jones), and last year's Alabama State champs (Huntsville).  The Lady War Eagles look to continue their strong play this week against Sandy Creek and Wesleyan.

Football:  The War Eagle Football team opened up the 2007 season with non-region opponent Heritage High School.  Woodward would use a ball control offense to score twice against the Patriots, marching the length of the field on both occasions.  The defense would play with speed and intensity shutting out Heritage for four quarters of action.  In the end, Woodward would move to 1-0 with a 14-0 win.  Next up for the War Eagles will be Dunwoody High School.  Kickoff is set for 7:30 PM at Graham Hixon Field at Colquitt Stadium.

Softball: The Lady War Eagles would be hampered all week with rain out after rain out.  Woodward would get one game in during the week as they played host to region foe Banneker. Katherine Martin would lead the team going 2-for-2 with a double and 3 RBI.  Rachel Menter would go 2-for-2 with a double and 2 RBIs and Sarah Runner went 2-for-3 with 2 runs scored as the Lady War Eagles won 15-0.  Next up for Woodward will be a busy schedule with games against Duluth, Northgate, Sandy Creek and Creekside all scheduled for the week.

 

The Week of September 3rd – September 8th

 

Cross Country:  The Boys Cross Country team finished 4th in the AAAA Race at the Carrollton Invitational on Saturday. Nathan Vassey, with a 2nd place finish overall, led Woodward while Andrew Lauer (5th) and Chris Pryor (7th) also finished in the top ten. Nick Widener and Mathew Greer both set course PR's and completed the scoring for Woodward. The team runs at Westminster on Saturday, September 11.

 

The girls cross country team ran well at the Carrollton Orthopedic Invitational on Saturday.  Several girls showed large improvements over theirs times from the same meet last year.  The team will run at Westminster on Tuesday and Marist this coming Saturday in what should be very competitive races.

Football:  The War Eagle Football team kicked off the 2007 home schedule on Friday evening by playing host to Dunwoody High School. The War Eagles struggled against a fast Dunwoody defense as Woodward lost 22-3. Woodward is now 1-1 on season and will travel to Northgate next.

Volleyball:  The Lady War Eagles had just one dual match during the week.  Woodward would beat a talented Sandy Creek squad 2-0 in the first match.  The second match was against defending AA State Champion Wesleyan.  The Lady War Eagles played Wolves tough but lost 2-1.  Woodward is now 8-11 overall on the season.

Softball:  The Lady War Eagle Softball team had a busy week with four games on the schedule.  Unfortunately, Woodward would finish 1-3 in games against Duluth, Northgate, Sandy Creek and Creekside.  Woodward would get a win against Creekside, 17-2, as Louise Johnson would pitch a complete game for the win.  Team batting leaders for the season are: Rachel Menter (senior-1st base) batting .440 (11-for-25) with 2 doubles, 1 triple, 8 RBI, 6 runs scored, Emily Bent (senior- CF) batting .352 (12-for-34) with 1 double, 9 runs scored, 7 RBI, and Katherine Martin (senior- catcher) batting .468 (15-for-32) with 4 doubles, 1 triple, 1 HR, 9 runs scored, and 7 RBI.

 

The Week of September 10th – September 15th

Cross Country:  The Girls Cross Country team ran well this past weekend at the Marist Double Dip Invitational.  Leading the team was Jennifer Rubel who placed 9th overall in 21:08.  Also setting a new personal record time was Kelsey Bilthouse in 23:25.  The Lady War Eagles placed 8th overall in a field that included several of the state's top teams.  The Boys team was idle this past week as they prepare for their next meet.  Both the Boys and Girls will be in action this coming weekend at the Sandy Creek Invitational.

Football:  The War Eagle Football team traveled to Northgate on Friday evening to play the Vikings on a wet and rainy evening. Woodward would get a solid game from both the offensive unit and defensive squad as they shutout the Vikings 24-0. The War Eagles improved to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in Region 2-AAAA.  Next up for Woodward will be a home game against Fayette County.

Volleyball:  Woodward would go 6-2 during last week’s action as the Lady War Eagles continue to improve every week.  Woodward would have little trouble with Washington and Chapel winning both matches 2-0.  Woodward would also play in the annual Lovett Block Party.  The Lady War Eagles would defeat McGill Toolen (AL), Oconee County, North Cobb, and Milton but fall to Hoover (AL) and Sandy Creek to finish 4-2 on the weekend.

Cheerleading:  The Woodward Football and Competition Cheerleaders had their first competition in 4 years as Competition Cheerleading returned to Woodward Academy.  The Lady War Eagles traveled this past Saturday to Flowery Branch High School were Woodward was able to take home the second place trophy.  Next up will be a competition at Kennesaw Mountain.

Softball: The Lady War Eagles were idle this week as several games were canceled due to weather.  Woodward will return to action with two region games this week; Tuesday @ Starr's Mill and Thursday home vs. McIntosh.

 

The Week of September 17th – September 22nd

Volleyball:  The Lady War Eagles began the week with victories against Alexander (25-18, 25-6) and Lithia Springs (25-19, 25-10).  Woodward was led by Alexis Woodson with 18 kills in two matches.  On Thursday, Woodward lost a close two set match to McIntosh (20-25, 26-28), and beat Columbus (26-24, 25-18).  The Columbus win marks the first win against Columbus in 3 matches this season.  During the 4 match span, Alexis Woodson tallied 34 kills (.509 hitting %).  Mallory Noland recorded 69 assists, while Gabi Smith had 16 digs.  This week the War Eagles continue Area play on Tuesday, and then play in the Berkeley Premier in Tampa, FL over the weekend.

Cheerleading:  In just their second competition of the season, the Woodward Academy Competition Cheerleaders placed 2nd at the Mountain Cheer Classic at Kennesaw Mountain High School.  Woodward missed capturing the 1st place trophy by just one point.  Mendy Trotter and Erica Forniss coach the Lady War Eagles.

Cross Country:  The Girls Cross Country team ran very well at the Sandy Creek Invitational this past Saturday. Woodward placed 3rd in the Championship Girls race against some strong competition including the top ranked teams from the A, AA, and AAA classifications.   Woodward was led by Jennifer Rubel who finished 3rd overall in the meet along with Caroline Wood who finished 8th.  The Boys Cross Country team also competed at Sandy Creek and finished in 4th place overall.  Leading the way for Woodward were Nathan Vassey, Andrew Lauer, Chris Pryor, Mathew Greer, and Carter Richardson. Clay Rossetti and Zach VanderPlate completed the top 7. Both teams are off this weekend and return to action on October 6th at the Alexander/Asics Invitational.

Softball:  The Lady War Eagles had three games during the week finishing with a 1-2 record.  Woodward would fall to Starr’s Mill (4-0) and McIntosh (9-0) but pick up a win over Walker (9-0).  In the victory over Walker, Bre Stein would strike out 12 in pitching a 3-hit shutout.  At the plate the Lady War Eagles were lead by Katherine Martin going 3-for-4 with a double and a triple, 2 RBI and 2 runs scored.  Also, Emily Bent went 2-for-3 with 2 runs scored and an RBI, and Katie Johnson came up with a big hit late in the game to drive in 2 runs and seal the victory for the War Eagles.

Football:  The War Eagle Football team suffered a 21-7 loss to Fayette County on Friday evening. Juwan Thompson had 135 yards rushing for the War Eagles in the loss. Woodward is now 2-2 overall and 1-1 in Region 2-AAAA.   Next up will be a trip to Creekside to take on the Seminoles.  Kickoff is set for 7:30 PM.

 

The Week of September 24th – September 29th

Volleyball:  The Woodward Volleyball team finished with a 6-2 record for the week.  On Tuesday the team finished off the regular season area play with wins over Douglas County, Westlake, and Mays, giving them a perfect area record of 7-0. 

Over the weekend, the Lady War Eagles traveled to Tampa, FL to play in the Berkeley Premier Tournament.  Woodward finished with a 3-2 record for the weekend with wins over previously unbeaten Leon (Tallahassee, FL), Berkeley Prep (Tampa, FL), and St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, FL).  The two losses came from Mercy Academy (Louisville, KY) and Plant (Tampa, FL).  Currently Mercy is ranked 7th in the nation by prepvolleyball.com, and Plant is ranked 20th.  For the weekend, the team was led by Alexis Woodson (43 kills, 7.5 blocks), Dana Barag (29 kills), Gabi Smith (12 aces), Lauren Hatcher (47 digs), Mallory Noland (153 assists), Mariah Woodson (31 kills, 9.5 blocks), and Zoey Morton (35 kills).  Lauren Hatcher was named to the all-tournament team for her strong defensive play. 

Football:  The War Eagles fell to 2-3 overall and 1-2 in Region 2-AAAA play with a 19-0 loss to Creekside this week.  Next Woodward will play host to Westlake on Oct. 5th and celebrate Lower School night at Colquitt Stadium.

Cheerleading:  The Competition Cheerleading squad faced some stiff competition at Grayson High School over the weekend. Despite not competing for three years, the girls placed 4th overall, finishing behind three of last year's state tournament teams, while beating two.

Softball:  The Lady War Eagles had a busy week with two regular season games as well as competing in the Milton Tournament were they played five games in two days.  On Monday Woodward lost to Pace Academy 1-0.  Bre Stein was the pitcher or record and spread out 3 hits over 7 innings while posting 6 strikeouts.  On Wednesday Woodward would have little trouble with Westlake winning 15-0. Katie Bowen would go 3-for-4 and pitch a CG game shutout while Sarah Runner would add a 3-for-5 night with a double, 2 runs and 2 RBI.   In the first day of the Milton Tournament Woodward would lose to Buford 10-0 but rebound to beat Southwest Dekalb 5-4.  On Saturday Woodward would fall to Riverwood 11-1, defeat Camden County 4-3 in 8 innings and finish the tournament with a 5-0 loss to Alpharetta.  The Lady War Eagles win over Camden County came with plenty of excitement.  Hilary Phillips perfectly executed a sac bunt in the 8th to advance Emily Bent to 3rd.  Caitlin Miller came up with a big single to drive in Bent to put Woodward up 2-1.  Katie Bowen had a key single to advance Miller to 3rd.  With two outs, Sarah Runner hit a hard ground ball to the shortstop who overthrew first scoring Miller from 3rd on the error.  Going into the bottom of the 8th 3-1, Camden had a leadoff single to put runners on 1st and 3rd with no outs.  The second hitter of the inning drove in a run with a single, making the score 3-2.  With one out, the Woodward defense came up big with double play on a tag out play at 3rd base on a fielder's choice.  Third basemen Katie Bowen threw the tag on the runner and gunned it home; where catcher Katherine Martin held on to nail the runner at home securing a 3-2 Woodward victory.

 

The Week of October 1st – October 6th

 

Football:  The War Eagle Football team got a big win on as they defeated a talented Westlake team 17-13. Westlake's only touchdowns would come on a 99-yard kickoff return and a long punt return. Woodward (3-3, 2-2) would get touchdown runs from Jamal Paige and Greg Patton as well as a 37-yard FG from Michael McDonald.  Next up for Woodward Academy will be a trip to Banneker High School.

Cross Country: The Boys Cross Country team finished 12th out of 27 teams at the Asics Invitational over the weekend. Andrew Lauer finished first for Woodward; and Chris Pryor, Mathew Greer, Clay Rossetti, Kelly Click, Julian Knight, Wesley Smith, J.P. Tiernan, Tommy Ellis, and Desi Johnson all set personal records.  The Girls Cross Country team finished 4th out of 25 teams on Saturday. The Girls top five finishers included Caroline Wood, Mallery Aiken, Whitney Davis, Joanna Parkman, and Jennifer RubelJoanna Griffin and Tinsley Martin both set personal records.  Both teams compete this in Birmingham at the Great American Cross Country Festival on October 13th.

Softball: The Lady War Eagles finished the regular season on a strong note going 3-0 for the week.  Woodward defeated Holy Innocents 2-1 then celebrated Senior Night with a 15-5 win over Fayette Co. and ended the week with a 9-0 victory over North Springs.  Woodward finishes the regular season at the 5th seed in Region 2-AAAA and will face Fayette Co. in round one of the region tournament.

Volleyball:   The Lady War Eagle Volleyball team had yet another strong week finishing with a 5-1 record.  Woodward would defeat Starr’s Mill (2-0) and Chamblee (2-0) followed by a 3-1 record at the Northview play day.  Woodward will finish the regular season on Oct. 11th before starting the Area Tournament on Oct. 18th.  Woodward is 28-17 overall and ranked #3 in AAAA.

 

The Week of October 15th – October 20th

Cross Country:  The Boys and Girls Cross Country teams continued their preparations for the up-coming Region Meet by running in the Coach Wood Invitational at Gainesville College. Caroline Roberts and Caitlin Culver turned in personal best for the girls while Clay Rossetti and Zain Jiwani turned in personal best for the boys.

Volleyball:  The Varsity Volleyball Team advanced into the Sectional Tournament as the #1 seed from Area #1. Woodward swept through the Area Tournament over the weekend defeating Alexander, Chapel Hill and Lithia Springs. Woodward Academy will host the Sectional Tournament on Saturday, Oct. 27th. Tournament play starts at 9:00 AM with Woodward's first matched scheduled for 3:00 PM.

Football:  The War Eagle Football team celebrated Senior Night on Friday with a big 35-0 win over the McIntosh Chiefs. The offense would move the ball at will and the defense would record their 3rd shutout of the season as Woodward moves to 4-4 overall and 3-3 in the region.

 

The Week of October 22nd – October 27th

Volleyball:  The Varsity Volleyball team moved on to the AAAA State Semi-finals by beating Marist in 3 sets (25-20, 25-13, 28-26) on Saturday.  After two fairly easy wins in game 1 and 2, the third game began with Woodward falling behind 2-5.  After a 2 point Marist service run, the scores was 7-12.  The Lady War Eagles would then increased its level of focus and intensity to close out the game at 28-26, and only gave up two service points to a team known for its tough serving.  Key performers in the match included Zoey Morton (13 kills), Alexis Woodson (12 kills), Dana Barag (9 kills), Mariah Woodson (7 kills), and Mallory Noland (39 assists).  To get to the Quarter-final match, Woodward beat Loganville (25-6, 25-9, 25-9) and Dutchtown (25-14, 25-16, 25-10).  Next up for the War Eagles is the AAAA Semi-final match against McIntosh.

Cross Country:  The Girls Cross Country team ran very well this weekend at the Last Chance Invitational in Carrollton GA.  The team was led by Caroline Wood and Jennifer Rubel who placed 10th and 11th individually in the meet.  Also setting all time personal best performances on the challenging state championship course were Tinsley Martin and Caitlin Culver.  The Girls will be trying to defend their 2006 region championship this Saturday at Sandy Creek.  The Boys team also ran at the Last Chance Invitational but rested most of their top runners for the upcoming Region Meet.  Mathew Greer, Julian Knight, Carlos Duralde, Jim Adkins, Tommy Ellis, and Desi Johnson all set course personal records as the Boys team finished 14th overall.

Cheerleading:  Woodward Academy's Competition Cheerleading squad captured 3rd Place on Saturday at the Walton High School Competition. In their first year returning to competition status the Competition squad has already recorded two 2nd place finishes to go along with their 3rd Place finish at Walton.

Football:  The War Eagle Football team suffered a 28-12 loss at Starr's Mill on Friday evening. Woodward is now 3-4 in Region 2-AAAA and 4-5 overall. The Academy will celebrate Homecoming in the final game of the season as the War Eagles play host to Whitewater on November 2nd.

 

The Week of October 29th – November 3rd

Volleyball:  The Lady War Eagle Volleyball team lost a close 5 game match to McIntosh this week in the AAAA State Semi-Finals. McIntosh would take the first two games but Woodward would answer taking the next two. In the fifth and final game, Woodward would fall just short losing 15-13. Woodward finishes with a record 38-19 and yet another great season.

Football:  Woodward Academy celebrated Homecoming on Friday evening but unfortunately would suffer a 24-7 loss to Whitewater. The War Eagles would lead early 7-0 and were all tied up at halftime 7-7 but a strong 2nd half by Whitewater was too much for Woodward. Woodward Academy finishes the season 3-5 in Region 2-AAAA and 4-6 overall.

Cross Country:  The Boys Cross Country Team for finished 2nd in the Region on Saturday.  Freshman Nathan Vassey was the Region Champion with a personal record time of 16:38. Andrew Lauer, Chris Pryor, Mathew Greer, and Clay Rossetti completed the team's top five with Mathew and Clay running both recording personal records.  The Girls Cross Country team came in 3rd at the Region Championship meet.  The team was led by Carolione Wood who repeated her 2006 performance as region runner up.  In the JV race 6 of the 8 runners ran all time personal best times.  Both teams will now advance to the State Championship in Carrollton, GA.

Cheerleading:  The Competition Cheerleaders placed fifth this weekend at the region competition, missing the state tournament by one place. In there first season returning to competition status the Woodward squad recorded two 2nd place finishes and a 3rd place finish.

 

Winter Sports Preview

The Boys Varsity Swimming and Diving team is focusing on moving back into the top 10 at the State Championships in 2007-08.  The War Eagles will be led by Seniors Hank Schwartz and Ted Papleacos are coached by Kevin Greaney.  Also returning this season are State Qualifiers Stephen Waller, Hunter Wyatt, Ivan Duralde, Grant Moody and Robert Quillen.  With another strong season in 06-07 behind them, Woodward’s Varsity Girls Swimming and Diving team is preparing for an even better showing for the upcoming months. The team’s 7-3 record and a ninth place finish at the state meet are helping to pave the way for bigger and better performances this season.  Although the team said goodbye to some very important seniors, a crop of talented freshmen and a number of strong returners are looking to improve on old records and hoping to continue to build the Woodward reputation as a force to be reckoned with.  Swimmers Mallory Noland, Laurie King, and Chelsea Korski, who competed in the state meet last year, are especially excited for repeat state performances and the potential for some top eight finishes.

The Woodward Academy Wrestling team is looking for a strong start to the season in 2007-08. With only 3 seniors, the War Eagles will be young but experienced group, as several wrestlers return from last season already possessing varsity experience. A talented freshman class could see 3 starters in the lineup in 07-08.  With State placer winners Austin Gainey (5th at 112 lbs.), Doug Taylor (3rd at 140 lbs.), and returning State Champion Tommy Carney (135 lbs.) Woodward hopes to improve on its State Tournament 10th place finish from last year.

The 2007-2008 edition of the War Eagle Boys Basketball team will be a mix of experience and youth.  Woodward returns six seniors, including Corey Manning, Jamal Paige, and Kyle Florence.  The War Eagles will also have several freshmen and sophomores logging extensive playing time.  The War Eagles will be led this year by three-year starter Corey Manning who averaged 10 points and 5 rebounds per game.  The team also looks forward to major contributions from John Brogdon, Justin VanNoy, and Juwan Thompson.

The Lady War Eagle Basketball team is also excited about their upcoming season.  Woodward graduated 4 seniors from last year’s State Tournament team but return several players who contributed significant time in 2006.  Woodward will look to mix in some new faces with the returning veterans as they seek a 17th straight visit to the State Tournament.

 

The Week of November 12th – November 17th

Basketball:  The Girls and Boys Basketball teams tipped off the 2007-08 season with a pair of wins this week. The Girls defeated Eagles Landing 61-45 while the Boys team won 61-59. The Boys squad got 11 points and 7 rebounds from Malcolm Brogdon while Ronnie Harris and Juwan Thompson each chipped in with 9 points.  Woodward's first home game is scheduled for Tuesday, November 27th against Westlake.

Swimming: The Boys and Girls Swimming and Diving squad competed in the Wildcat Invitational at the Steve Lundquist Aquatic Center.  The Girls would record a 3rd place finish while the Boys squad finished in 9th place.  Combined the two squads finished 4th overall.  Woodward’s first home meet will be against Pace Academy on Monday, November 19th.

Wrestling:  The War Eagles continue to prepare for the start of their season.  Woodward’s first competition of the year will be at the Harrison Duals on Wednesday, November 21st.

 

The Week of November 19th - November 24th

Wrestling:  The Varsity Wrestlers went 2-2 at the recent Harrison Duals. The War Eagles defeated Jonesboro and Oxford, AL and lost to Murray County and #2 ranked Harrison. Going 3-1 on the day for Woodward were freshman Andy Khair, Junior Austin Gainey and Senior Tommy Carney. Mike Collins, Matt Berman, Travis Young, Nick Robertson, Garrett Gainey and Dean Burns all got their first Varsity wins at the meet.  The JV wrestlers went 4-1 and finished second in the Redan Chick-Fil-A Duals. Going 5-0 for the War Eagles were Mike Collins and Gevork Agasarkisian.

Swimming:  The Varsity Boys Swim and Dive team defeated Pace Academy 155-127 in their first home meet of the season.  Stephen Waller qualified for state in the 200 and 50 yard freestyle to help lead the War Eagles.  Other first place finishers included Ivan Duralde in the 200 IM and 100 freestyle, Stephen Waller, Grant Moody, Jay Turner and Ernest Cain in the 200 free relay, Grant Moody in the 100 backstroke, and Hank Schwartz, Robert Quillen, Jake McCune and Ivan Duralde in the 400 freestyle relay. 

The Girls Varsity Swim and Dive team started off its dual meet season with a 238 to 72 victory over Pace Academy.  The 200 medley relay team of Genevieve Wood, Christina Sabol, Sami Sater, and Mallory Noland kicked off the evening with a state qualifying time and first place finish.  Chelsea Korski, Olivia Boggs, Mallory Noland, Sami Sater, Danielle LeFevers, and Sydney Currenti then rounded out the individual events with at least one win a piece.  The 200 free relay of Chelsea Korski, Olivia Boggs, Julie Chambers, and Mallory Noland and the 400 free relay of Chelsea Korski, Sydney Currenti, Olivia Boggs, and Laurie King also posted first place finishes and state qualifying times.   Additionally, Jelly Young’s impressive performance on the boards earned her a second place finish.

 

Woodward Signings - Four Woodward baseball players and a tennis player signed letters of intent during the week of November 12th.  In baseball, Brandon Miller will attend Georgia Tech; Brennan May will attend the University of Georgia; Blake Hudson will attend Young Harris; and Andrew Cadger will attend Furman.  Woodward tennis player Powell Porter signed his letter to attend Auburn University on a tennis scholarship. Powell is a 3-year letterman on the varsity tennis team and is one of the team’s captains. He is ranked #17 in the USTA rankings in the 18’s division for Georgia.  In softball, Katherine Martin has signed a letter of intent to play at North Georgia College and State University.

 

The Week of November 26th – December 1st

Basketball:  The Girls Basketball team had a pair of games this week with both being against Region 2-AAAA opponents.  On Tuesday the Lady War Eagles suffered a tough 44-40 loss to Westlake as Woodward would have a tough night shooting.  The Girls team would rebound on Friday though as they picked up their first region win of the season 42-31 over Northgate.  Woodward Girls are 2-1 overall and 1-1 in the region.

The Boys teams also played host to Westlake and then traveled to Northgate.  The War Eagles would fall to a very talented Westlake squad 73-56 but would defeat Northgate 50-38.  The War Eagles have had a balanced attack led by Malcolm Brogdon and Juwan Thompson with solid rebounding and defense by Corey Manning, John Brogdon, and Justin VanNoy.  The Boys team is currently 2-1 overall and 1-1 in the region.

 

The Week of December 3rd – December 8th

Wrestling:  The War Eagle Wrestling team has had a busy first couple weeks to the 2007 season.  Woodward recently traveled to South Carolina where they compete in the Eastside Duals.  Woodward would defeat Cresent, West Oak and Berea, all from South Carolina, to go 3-1 overall.  The team would then follow up with a 9th place finish (24 teams) at the Southern Slam in Greenville, SC.  Doug Taylor finished 1st at 145 pounds and Tommy Carney would finish 2nd at 160 pound.  Woodward also competed in the annual South Metro Invitational recording a 7th place finish (30 teams).  Placing for the War Eagles was: Andy Khair 5th at 103#; Garrett Gainey 6th at 119#; Russell Schrader 5th at 130#; Austin Gainey 6th at 135#; Doug Taylor 3rd at 140#; Tommy Carney 2nd at 160#.

Basketball:  The Lady War Eagle Basketball team would go 1-1 during the week with both games coming against region opponents.  Woodward would loss their 2nd region game of the year against a solid Fayette County team 48-34 on a cold shooting night for the Lady War Eagles.  The team would bounce back over the weekend as they would handle Banneker 52-39.  The Girls team now stands at 3-2 overall, 2-2 in region play.

The Boys squad also went 1-1 during the week as they too played Fayette County and Banneker.  Fayette County would bring a potential region champion caliber team to Woodward and defeat the War Eagles 91-54 but the Boys team would get an important region win on Friday as they defeated Banneker 50-46.  Malcolm Brogdon would record a double-double with 19 points and 16 rebounds as the War Eagles moved to 2-2 in region play.

Swimming:  The Girls Varsity Swim and Dive team added another win to their now 3-0 record with a 212 to 94 point victory over Dunwoody.  The relay of Genevieve Wood, Julie Chambers, Sydney Currenti, and Mallory Noland kicked off the evening with a 1st place finish in the 200 medley relay.  Individual first place finishes over the course of the meet included Chelsea Korski in the 200 free, Olivia Boggs in the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke, Sydney Currenti in the 100 fly and 500 free, and Danielle LeFevers in the 100 backstroke.  The 200 free relay of Korski, Chambers, Noland, and Boggs and the 400 free relay of Korski, Noland, Elizabeth DuPre and Laurie King also earned 1st place spots.  Worth mention are the 200 free and 500 free heats which were swept in the top 3-4 spots by the Lady Eagles. Liz King and Betsey Poore helped dominate in the 500, while Elizabeth DuPre, Mary Margaret Winn, and Lindsay Walker rounded out the 200 free sweep.  The Lady divers would finish one, two, and three in the diving competition. Jelly Young finished first, Kathryn Woodruff second and Kendyl Mygatt third.

The Boys squad would fall short in a close competition against Dunwoody 162-150.  The War Eagles are 1-2 on the young season with an upcoming meet against Marist on Wednesday, Dec. 12th.

 

The Week of December 10th – December 15th

Wrestling:  The War Eagle Wrestling team traveled to Jefferson, GA for a tri-meet between Jefferson and Flowery Branch.  Woodward would defeat Flowery Branch 54-25 but would fall to the top rank Jefferson squad 64-9.  Jefferson is the defending State Champion and currently ranked #1 in 2007-08 polls.  Woodward would then travel to Fort Mill, SC for the Beef O’Brady Invitational.  The War Eagles would finish 5th in the team standings with the following wrestlers placing: Andy Khair 5th at 103#; Garrett Gainey 3rd at 119#; Austin Gainey 3rd at 135#; Doug Taylor 2nd at 145#; Tommy Carney 1st at 160#; Scott Edelson 4th at 189#.  In taking 1st place Tommy Carney beat the three time South Carolina state champion.

Swimming/Diving: The Girls and Boys Swimming/Diving squads took on Marist in a dual meet this week.  The Girls squad would suffer their first dual meet loss of the season 201-114 while the Boys would also fall 211-103. Both teams will now be idle until after the Holiday break.

Basketball:  The Girls and Boys Basketball squads had a busy week with 3 games on the schedule.  The Girls Basketball team improved to 3-2 in region play as they also defeated Whitewater 50-24 early in the week.  The Boys Basketball team recorded their 3rd region win on Tuesday with a 54-42 win over Whitewater. Corey Manning and John Brogdon each scored 15 points to lead the War Eagles. The Girls Basketball team then improved to 6-2 overall with a pair of wins over Starr's Mill and Woodland on Friday and Saturday. The Lady War Eagles head into the Holidays 4-2 in region play. The Boys squad would go 1-1 against the same opponents with the War Eagles getting a win against Woodland while losing to Starr's Mill.

 

Holiday Break Recap

Wrestling:  The War Eagle Wrestling team competed in three tournaments over the holiday break. The War Eagles would finish 2nd overall at the Buckhorn Border Wars, 4th at the War Eagle Classic and 4th at the Hoover Invitational. Tommy Carney would also break the school record in all-time wins with 190 total during the Hoover Invitational. The War Eagles will now prepare for the Region 2-AAAA Dual Championships.

Basketball:  The Girls and Boys Varsity Basketball teams stayed busy over the Holiday Break with a pair of tournaments. The Girls team would go undefeated during the break winning two games at the Villa Rica Tournament. The Lady War Eagles would follow that up winning the Westminster Tournament going 3-0 and concluded the break with a Region 2-AAAA victory over McIntosh. The Boys team would play .500 basketball over the break going 2-0 at Villa Rica, 1-2 at Westminster's tournament before losing to McIntosh. Both teams return to action Friday, January 11th at Woodland.

 

The Week of January 7th – January 12th

 

Wrestling:  The Woodward Wrestling team shocked the Region 2AAAA wrestling community by pulling off a huge upset at Fayette Co. H.S. over the weekend.  The Woodward wrestlers ran the table and went 8-0 beating pre-tournament favorites, McIntosh, Fayette Co., and Whitewater to win the Region Dual title and qualify for the AAAA State Duals in Macon. Senior Captains Doug Taylor and Tommy Carney each went 8-0 on the weekend and notched their 50th wins of the season. Also going 8-0 on the weekend were Andy Khair, Garrett Gainey, Austin Gainey, and Russell Schrader.

 

Basketball:  The Lady War Eagle Basketball team extended their current win streak to 12 games with wins over Woodland (79-16) and Creekside (62-40) to improve to 14-2 overall and 6-2 in Region play.  Elan Brown (12 pts/gm), Lucy Boone (9 pts/gm) and Kristi Ware (9pts/gm) continue to lead the scoring for Woodward.  Sophomore Sarah Runner scored 20 points including 6 of 8 shooting from behind the 3-point line in Woodward’s win over Woodland.

The Boys Varsity Squad would go 0-2 during the week with losses against Woodland (51-49) and Creekside (75-35).  The War Eagles are currently 8-8 overall and 3-5 in Region 2-AAAA play. 

Swimming:  The Boys and Girls Swimming and Diving team was idle this week as they prepare for an up-coming meet against Northgate, Paideia, and East Coweta.

 

The Week of January 14th – January 19th

Basketball:  The Girls Basketball team continues to play well and improve every week.  The Lady War Eagles picked up a pair of wins this week pushing their consecutive win streak to 14 games.  Woodward defeated Westlake 55-50 and then defeated Northgate 56-35.  Against Northgate, Chase Morgan scored 11 points had 11 rebounds and added 5 blocked shots to help lead Woodward.  The Lady War Eagles are now 16-2 overall and 8-2 in Region play.  The Boys Basketball team would go 1-1 during the week with a loss to Westlake (70-39) followed by an exciting overtime win against Northgate 52-50.  Against Northgate, freshman Ronnie Harris would hit a pair of free throws with no time left on the clock to send the game into overtime.  Malcolm Brogdon led the scoring with 16 points, most coming in overtime.

Wrestling:  The War Eagle Wrestling team followed up their Region 2-AAAA Championship with a trip to the State Dual Championship.  Woodward would go 2-1 in the tournament that was shorten due to inclement weather.  Woodward defeated Jones County 65-12 and Woodland (Cartersville) 29-28 but fell to the eventual State Champion Ringgold 36-33.

Swimming:  The Boys Swimming and Diving team had a pair of meets during the week.  On Tuesday, Woodward would defeat Northgate (201-43), Paideia (201-124) and East Coweta (201-159) to improve to 4-3 in dual meet action.  First place finishers were: 200 Medley and 200 Free Relay of Grant Moody, Robert Quillen, Stephen Waller, and Ivan Duralde; Stephen Waller (200 Free), Ivan Duralde (200 IM and 500 Free), Grant Moody (50 Free), and Hank Schwartz (100 Fly).  On Thursday the Boys team played host to a very strong Roswell team losing 167-127.

The Girls squad also took on Northgate, Paideia and East Coweta in a quad meet as well as Roswell in a head-to-head meet.  The Lady War Eagles defeated Northgate (247-120), Paideia (247-108) and East Coweta (247-73).  Woodward would then improve their dual meet record to 7-1 with a 192-109 win over Roswell.

 

The Week of January 21st – January 26th

Swimming/Diving:  The Girls and Boys Swimming and Diving teams hosted Westminster early in the week before competing in the annual Metro City Championship.  Against Westminster the Girls squad closed out its dual meet season with a heartbreaking loss 154 to 160.  The small gap was made possible by all the girls’ incredible performances including some outstanding ones.  Christina Sabol made her long awaited state cut in the 100 breastroke swimming alongside first place finisher Olivia Boggs who also took first in the 200 IM.  Other first place finishes included Mallory Noland in the 50 and 100 free and Chelsea Korski in the 200 free.  Additionally, the 200 free and 400 free relay teams of Mallory Noland, Julie Chambers, Olivia Boggs, Lee Behr, Laurie King, Liz King, and Sydney Currenti also took the tops spots.  The Girls finish the dual meet schedule with a record of 7-2.  The Boys squad put forth a valiant effort against Westminster, the reigning State Champion in Boys Swimming/Diving, but lost 223-86.  Stephen Waller recorded a first place finish in the 500 yard freestyle for the War Eagles.

Both teams competed in the annual Metro City Championships made up of over 50 teams.  The Girls squad would finish 7th overall while the Boys squad would finish 13th.

The Girls team had an impressive showing as they improved on their 10th place finish from a year ago.  The day long meet ended with finals where the top ten finishers in each event competed again.  Mallory Noland in the 50 free, Chelsea Korski in the 200 and 100 free, and Olivia Boggs in the 200 IM and the 100 breastroke, all qualified for finals in each of their individual events and placed in top ten overall.  The 200 free relay team of Noland, Korski, Boggs, and Julie Chambers placed 2nd overall, and their time also shattered the school record.  The 400 free relay team of Noland, Korski, Boggs, and Laurie King placed 6th overall.

Wrestling:  The War Eagle Wrestling team hosted Northview, Collins Hill and Groves High School this week.  Woodward would defeat Groves and Northview but fall to the AAAAA State Dual Champions Collins Hill.

Riflery:  The Woodward Academy Rifle Team returns to competition in 2008.  Woodward would have to matches during the week.  The War Eagles would kick off the season taking on one of the top teams in the state in East Coweta HS losing 1131-1094 but would get their first win of the year against Westlake 1123-1078.

Basketball:  Girls and Boys Basketball had a busy week with three games on the schedule.  The Girls squad would have their 14 game win streak broken by a strong Fayette County team 52-28.  The Lady War Eagles would rebound with wins against Banneker (57-12) and Villa Rica (47-30).  Lucy Boone, Elan Brown and Kristi Ware all scored double digits against Banneker and Villa Rica.  The Girls squad is now 18-3 overall and 9-3 in Region 2-AAAA.  The Boys squad had a tough week as they would go 0-3 against Fayette County (65-49), Banneker (50-49) and Villa Rica (80-53).  The War Eagles lost a heartbreaker to Banneker on a last second shot and then had to face a red-hot Villa Rica squad.  The Boys were led by senior Corey Manning, scoring in double figures all three games including a 19 point performance against Banneker.  Juwan Thompson also chipped in double figures in each of the three games.

 

The Week of January 28th – February 2nd

Basketball:  The Girls and Boys Basketball squads had a pair of games this week.  Woodward Academy started the week playing host to Whitewater.  The Girls team would have an easy time of it with a 73-36 win.  The Boys team would struggle shooting the ball on the evening and fall 42-35.  Next for Woodward was a trip to Starr’s Mill for another Region 2-AAAA match-up.  The Girls squad would come away with another victory 58-33 as they pushed their overall record to 20-3.  The Boys team would come away with a hard fought 50-47 win and moved to 10-13 overall.  Just one week remains on the regular season schedule before the start of the Region 2-AAAA Tournament which will be hosted this year by Fayette County High School.

Wrestling:  The War Eagle Wrestling team played host to three teams on Wednesday this week with Dalton, Marist, and Stone Mountain visiting Woodward Academy.  The War Eagles would suffer a disappointing loss to Dalton 43-32 before defeating Marist 55-14 and Stone Mountain 51-22.  Woodward Academy has a 20-7 dual meet record on the season.

Riflery:  Woodward Academy’s Rifle Team had two matches during the week.  Woodward would break the 1100 point mark in both matches as they defeated Creekside 1120-1005 and Banneker 1124-995.  In their first year back into competition, the team is now 3-1 overall.

Swimming/Diving:  The Girls and Boys Swimming and Diving teams were both idle this week as they prepare for the Georgia State Swimming and Diving Championships starting on Wednesday, February 6th at Westminster.

Football:  The National Signing Day is quickly approach and another Woodward Academy athlete made a verbal commit to play at the next level.  Woodward football player and tight end Corey Manning gave UConn a verbal commit to play football for the Huskies in 2008.

 

The Week of February 4th – February 9th

Swimming/Diving:  The Girls Swimming and Diving team capped off its season with a phenomenal record breaking weekend at the State Championships at Westminster.  The girls set the stage Friday night at prelims qualifying for finals in a number of individual and relay events, with recognition to Christina Sabol and Julie Chambers for their solid individual swims.  The Saturday night finals brought back the top 16 finishers in each event.  The 200 medley relay of Genevieve Wood, Julie Chambers, Sami Sater, and Mallory Noland finished 12th overall.  The 200 free relay of Chambers. Noland, Chelsea Korski, and Olivia Boggs placed 3rd overall and shattered the school record.  And the 400 free relay of Noland, Korski, Boggs, and Laurie King finished 4th overall and annihilated another school record.  Mallory Noland broke her 100 free school record and placed 6th in the 50 free.  Chelsea Korski placed 8th in the 200 free and 11th in the 100 free.  And Olivia Boggs finished 11th in the 200 IM and 9th in the 100 breast, also breaking the school record.  The girls finished 6th overall out of close to 100 teams, one of the highest finishes in recent seasons.

The Boys team placed 15th overall at the State Championships.  Top performances for the boys were - 200 Free Relay team of Grant Moody, Ernest Cain, Ivan Duralde, and Stephen Waller (8th place); 400 Free Relay team of Moddy, Duralde, Waller and Hank Schwartz (11th place) and Stephen Waller in the individual 200 Freestyle (13th place).

Wrestling:  The War Eagle Wrestling team had a busy week as they wrapped up the regular season dual meet schedule.  Early in the week Woodward traveled to Stockbridge.  Woodward would defeat Cherokee (46-23) and Redan (63-14) before losing to Stockbridge (43-20).  Next up for the War Eagles was head-to-head dual meet against Miller Grove which Woodward would win handily 58-10.  Woodward finished off the regular season schedule with a trip to Parkview.  The War Eagles would fall to Parkview (53-24) and Eastside (37-29) before defeating South Forsyth (48-16).  Woodward finishes the dual meet schedule with a record of 23-10 and will now prepare for the Traditional format tournaments.

Basketball:  Woodward Academy Girls and Boys Basketball teams celebrated Senior Night early in the week on Tuesday. The Girls team led by seniors Lucy Boone and Chase Morgan defeated McIntosh 49-25. The Boys squad, led by seniors Kyle Florence, Michael Isaacs, Corey Manning, Jamal Paige, Trenton Turner and Justin VanNoy, lost in a heart breaker 41-40.  Next, both teams traveled to Creekside for the regular season finale.  The Girls Squad would come away with a 43-37 win while the Boys squad would fall 58-46.  Both teams will not start the Region 2-AAAA Tournament.

 

The Week of February 18th – February 23rd

Wrestling:  The Woodward Wrestlers completed their season placing 9th in the 76 team AAAA State tournament at the Gwinnett Arena. The wrestlers were lead by senior co-captains Doug Taylor and Tommy Carney. Doug Taylor placed 4th at 140lbs. and finishes his season with a 75-8 record. Tommy Carney won his second consecutive AAAA State title at 152lbs. by pinning his Jackson Co. opponent and finishing the year with a 77-5 record. His 77 wins set the new Georgia state record for wins in a single season. The previous record was 74 so Doug Taylor also eclipsed this mark. Tommy also finishes second on the all-time career wins list for the state of Georgia with 223. Congratulations to Doug and Tommy and all the wrestlers on their accomplishments this season.

Basketball:  The Girls Basketball team traveled to Baldwin High School for the first round of the AAAA State Basketball Tournament.  This marks the 17th consecutive season the Lady War Eagles have made the tournament field.  Ashley Pritchett scored 19 points and Elan Brown poured in 17 points but the Lady War Eagles fell in a one point heartbreaker 55-54.

Lacrosse:  The Boys Varsity Lacrosse team kicked off the 2008 season on this week playing host to Kennesaw Mountain.  New head coach Nick Weil got his first win at Woodward Academy as the War Eagles won 6-5.

Riflery:  The Woodward Academy Rifle team continued with their impressive season as they return this year to GHSA competition.  Woodward defeated Griffin High School 1134-1102 in a strong showing and improved to 6-1 on the season.  The win earned Woodward Academy a 2nd place finish in the Area Regular season schedule.

Soccer:  The Boys Soccer team had a pair of games during the week.  Woodward would host Tri-Cities on Tuesday and come away with a 1-1 draw.  The War Eagles followed up with a trip to North Cobb were they fell 6-0.  The Girls squad had just one match on the schedule as they traveled to Lovett.  Woodward would play a tough Lovett Girls squad to a 2-2 tie.

Tennis:  The Boys and Girls Tennis teams splits matches during the week.  First, Woodward traveled to Northview for a tough AAAAA matchup.  The Northview boys are the defending AAAAA State Champions will their Girls were the AAAAA State Runner-up in 2007.  The Boys would fall 4-1 while the Girls lost 3-2 though both matches were very well played.  Woodward followed up with a sweep of Chapel Hill as the Boys squad won 4-1 and the Girls won 5-0.

 

The Week of February 25th – March 1st

Wrestling:  Woodward Academy Wrestler Tommy Carney broke the Georgia State High School record for total wins in a season at the AAAA State Wrestling Tournament over the weekend. Tommy finished the season 77-5 and won his 2nd consecutive State Championship. Tommy's 77 wins ranks 3rd nationally. Woodward wrestler Doug Taylor finished the year with 75 wins ranking him 2nd in the state to Carney and 5th nationally. Congratulations to both wrestlers on great season and careers at Woodward Academy.

Tennis:  The Boys and Girls Tennis teams went 2-0 on the week.  Both teams defeated Pace Academy with the Girls winning 5-0 and Boys winning 4-1.  Later in the week the Boys would defeat Walker 5-0 while the Girls would come away with a 3-2.  For the Girls team Jordana Klein, no. 2 singles, Marisa Smith, no. 3 singles, and Katie Paradies and Ashlyn Temples, no. 1 doubles, all had 2 wins.  Dorrie Paradies, no. 1 singles, and Ayanna Groves and Ali Ross, no. 2 doubles, all had 1 win.

Soccer:  The Girls Varsity Soccer team began region play facing Northgate and Fayette Co. last week.  The Eagles managed a close win over Northgate taking the Vikings into overtime penalty kicks.  Congratulations to Maddie Barnes, Lexie Gropper, Lucy Boone and Sydney Meyers for netting their PK's and to freshmen Connie Organ for stopping the last Northgate PK and securing the win.   After a few days of restructure and practice the Lady War Eagles came back strong against Fayette with a 4-0 shut out.   Connie Organ earned her first career shut out with the win.  Woodward showed their strength in the mid-field with three goals coming from the center of the field.  Maddie Barnes led the offense with two goals and Amelia Donlan added an assist and goal.  Lucy Boone juggled both a defensive and offensive position during the game - but managed to find the net shortly after she moved into the forward position.

The Boys Soccer team also had a good week finishing with a pair of wins.  The War Eagles handled Northgate 3-0 early in the week and then defeated Fayette County 2-1 in an important Region 2-AAAA match.  The Boys squad is now 2-0 in region play.

Girls Lacrosse:  The Varsity Girls lacrosse team who opened their season with a 12-7 victory over Columbus. The team was lead by 6 goals from Ann Bates and 4 goals and 2 assists from Rachel Neill. The defense of Valerie Shuping, Kim Klamon, Riley Cullen, Haley Snyder, and goalie turned in a strong performance holding Columbus to one goal in the second half.

Boys Lacrosse:  The War Eagles went 1-1 during the week.  Monday, Woodward lost to a very strong and talented Harrison squad 15-3.  The War Eagles would bounce right back with a 4-3 win over Wesleyan and are now 3-1 overall.

Golf:  The Woodward Varsity Girls Golf team opened its season at the Red Terror Ryder Cup in Jekyll Island. The team of Felicity Lloyd-Jones and Laurie King finished tied for 9th out of 24 teams with a 77 while the team of Kathleen Berman and Chloe Bootstaylor finished in 20th place.

The Boys Golf team defeated Northgate in their season opener 160-164.  Walker Sullivan led Woodward with a round of 38 while Matt Kelly shot a 39.

Riflery:  In their first year returning to competition the Woodward Academy Rifle team will advance to the Area 5 Championship.  Woodward defeated Newton HS 1139-1117 in the Area 5 Sectional.

 

The Week of March 3rd – March 8th

Baseball:  The War Eagle Baseball team would go 2-0 on the week with wins over Henry County and Landmark Christian.  Woodward would beat Henry County 15-12 behind a 3-run HR from Brandon Miller and a pair of triples from Andrew Cadger then follow that up with a 13-4 win over Landmark.  The War Eagles are now 6-0 on the season.

Golf:  The Boys Golf team picked up a big win during the week as they defeated defending State Champion Westminster 158-162.  Low scores for the War Eagles were 38’s by Jordan Redd and Stephen Ahnrud.

The Girls team competed in the Gwinnett Open on a cold, snowy Saturday.   The Lady War Eagles would take 5th place overall as Laurie King would shot a career low 18 hole round of 88.

Tennis:  The Boys and Girls Tennis team had a pair of matches during the week.  First up was a match against Region 2-AAAA foe Whitewater.  Both squads would have little trouble picking up wins as neither team would drop a game, both winning 5-0.  Starr’s Mill would visit Woodward later in the week in another Region 2-AAAA match.  The Boys squad would sweep the Panthers 5-0 but the Girls team would fall in a close match 3-2.  The Boys team is now 7-1 while the Girls are 6-2.

Lacrosse:  The Boys Lacrosse team had three games on the schedule this week but would only get two in due to bad weather.  Early in the week the War Eagles would defeated East Coweta 8-2.  Next Woodward played host to Chattahoochee and lost a very close 6-5 match.  The Boys team is now 4-2 on the season.

The Girls Lacrosse team had just one match against Sprayberry this week.  The Lady War Eagles improved to 2-0 with a 13-4 victory over Sprayberry last night. Woodward was lead by 5 goals from Ann Bates, 4 goals from Julia Genz, 3 goals from Ginny Hanger, 1 goal and 1 assist from Rachel Neill, and assists from Kathleen Sherali, Molly Bates, and Amanda Mallen.

Soccer:  The Boys Soccer team picked up a big Region 2-AAAA win in their one game this week.  The War Eagles traveled to Whitewater and came away with a 2-1 win in a match that was decided in penalty kicks.  The Boys are 3-3-2 on the season.

The Girls Soccer team had a pair of matches during the week.  The Lady War Eagles would score a season high goals with five as they defeated Paideia 5-1.  In a Region 2-AAAA matchup against Whitewater later in the week, the Lady War Eagles would fall 2-1 in penalty kicks.  The Girls stand at 3-3-1 overall.

 

Spring Break Update

Woodward Academy spring athletics went into Spring Break boosting impressive records and teams playing very well in 2008.  The Varsity Boys Soccer team started off slow but have rebounded lately winning three of their last four including a key Region 2-AAAA win in penalty kicks over Whitewater.  The Girls Varsity Soccer team has been bit a little by the injury bug and has lost 2 of their last 3, though all three were close games.  The Boys are 3-3-2 while the Girls are 3-4-2.

The Boys and Girls Tennis teams have a strong tradition of good play and have continued that in 2008.  The Boys squad, the 2007 defending AAAA State Champions, has started out 7-1 this season with their only loss coming to AAAAA power Northview.  The Girls team stands at 6-2 on the season with their only losses coming against Northview and Starr’s Mill. 

Both Lacrosse teams have gotten off to good starts this spring under new Head Coach Nick Weil.  Woodward currently stands at 5-2 on the season and have won 4 of their last 5 games.  The Girls team played in the Dogwood Invitational prior to the break going 1-2 in the two day tournament.  The Lady War Eagles are now 4-2 overall.

The War Eagle Baseball team advanced to the 2nd round of the state tournament in 2007 and the War Eagles are looking for bigger and better things in 2008.  Woodward is off to a 7-0 start this spring including a 3-0 record in Region 2-AAAA play.

The Boys and Girls Golf team each hope to have strong showings in the region in 2008 and make return trips to the State Meet.  The Boys squad was 3-0 in head-to-head play going into Spring Break including a big win over Westminster.  The Girls team had played in a pair of tournaments finishing 5th at the Gwinnett Open.

Weather has hampered the Track and Field schedule this spring with just one meet prior to spring break.  The both teams each return one state qualifier to the 2008 squads. Sophomore Drew Philips in the pole vault and junior Elan Brown in the high jump hope to return to their respective state meet in May.

 

The Week of March 24th – March 29th

 

Tennis:  The Boys and Girls Tennis teams had a busy week.  Woodward would play three head-to-head matches during the week with both teams going a perfect 3-0.  Both teams would beat Fayette County, Westlake, and Creekside without losing a match.  Over the weekend both teams competed in the Buckhead Rotary Tournament.  The Girls would beat Chattahoochee but fall to Kennesaw Mountain while the Boys would beat Chattahoochee and lose to McCallie (TN).

 

Soccer:  The Girls Soccer team would go 1-1 during the week.  Early in the week the Lady War Eagles would pick up an easy win over Creekside 15-0 but on Friday would fall to a talented McIntosh squad 2-0.  The Boys team would also take on Creekside and McIntosh getting an 11-1 over Creekside before losing to McIntosh 1-0.

 

Baseball:  The War Eagle Baseball team continues to play very good baseball and is currently perfect in Region 2-AAAA play.  The War Eagles defeated Northgate by a score of 12-10 on Wednesday. Will Deitrichs, David Peirce, and Will Madden all pitched for the War Eagles. The offense was lead by Brennan May going 3-4 with 2 homers, Brandon Miller 2-4 with a triple, Tommy Corbin 2-4 with a double, and Corey Betterson 2-4 with a double.  Woodward would then defeat Whitewater on Friday by a score of 10-6. Andrew Cadger pitched 5 1/3 innings for the win and Will Dietrichs closed in relief.  The offense was supplied with homeruns by Andrew Cadger, Brennan May, and William Arnold. Delino Deshield and Tommy Corbin both went 2-4.  The War Eagles are now 11-2 overall and 6-0 in region play.

Lacrosse:  The Boys Lacrosse team had a pair of games this week as they played host to both South Forsyth and McEachern.  Woodward would battle a tough South Forsyth team to a 6-6 tie at the end of regulation but in sudden-death overtime South Forsyth would get the 7-6 win.  The War Eagles would rebound though on Friday as they improved to 6-3 overall with a 10-1 thumping of McEachern.

The Girls Lacrosse team also had a pair of games this week.  The Lady War Eagles traveled to Starr’s Mill on Tuesday and fall to the Panthers 9-5.  On Thursday, Woodward would play host to Hillgrove and get an 11-6 win as they improved to 6-3 on the year.

Golf:  The Boys Golf team had a GREAT showing at the Madison County Invitational on Saturday.  In a field of 24 teams, Woodward Academy would finish 2nd overall with a team score 301.  John Edge would fire a very impressive round of 1-under par 71 to finish as 1st Place Low Medalist.  Also contributing for Woodward was Walker Sullivan (75), Matt Kelly (77), Stephen Ahnrud (78), and Jordan Redd (83).

 

The Week of March 31st – April 5th

 

Baseball:  The War Eagle Baseball team continues their strong play in 2008.  Woodward would go 2-0 during the week while also having two games rained out.  Brandon Miller, Tommy Corbin, and William Arnold would all hit homers in a 7-3 win over Creekside.  Earlier in the week, Woodward would have little trouble with Fayette County as they defeated the Tigers 17-0.  Andrew Cadger went 3-3 with a homerun and a double, Delino Deshields went 2-2 with a double, and Tommy Corbin added his 2nd homer of the week.

 

Soccer:  The Boys Soccer team would have just one game this week as rain weather canceled their other match.  Woodward played a strong St. Pius team tough but would fall 2-1.  The War Eagles are now 4-5-2 overall and 4-1 in region play.

 

The Girls squad also had just one match during the week.  The Lady War Eagles traveled to Holy Innocents were they would record a 2-1 win over the Golden Bears.  Woodward now stands at 5-5-2 overall and are 3-2 in region play.

 

Lacrosse:  Woodward’s Girls Lacrosse team had a busy week playing in three games.  First, Woodward improved their record to 6-3 and 2-0 in area with a 16-2 victory over Tri-Cites. The team was lead by Kathleen Sherali with 2 goals and 6 assists, Ann Bates with 3 goals and an assist, Molly Bates and Julia Genz with 2 goals, and Amanda Mallen, Ginny Hanger, Ruth Wellborn, Chanel Goldberg, Anna Ford, Camille Spalding, and Emalee Weil with 1 goal each.  The Lady War Eagles followed that up with an 8-5 victory over McEachern. The team was lead by 3 goals from Rachel Neill, 2 goals and an a assist from Kathleen Sherali, 2 goals from Ann Bates, 1 goal from Julia Genz, and an assist from Ginny Hanger. The defense of Valerie Shuping, Kim Klamon, Haley Snyder, and Riley Cullen played an amazing game to hold McEachern 5 goals below their season average. Caroline Luke played a great game in goal with 13 saves.  Finally, Woodward improved their record to 8-3 with a 15-7 victory over Decatur. The team was lead by 7 goals from Rachel Neill, 4 goals from Julia Genz, 3 goals from Ann Bates, and 1 goal from Ginny Hanger.

 

The Boys Lacrosse team had a pair of games during the week.  Early in the week the War Eagles had little trouble defeating Wheeler 11-4 improving Woodward to 7-3 on the season.  The War Eagles then faced a very tough and talented Decatur squad on senior night.  Woodward recognized seniors Nelson Abels, Conor Busby, and Wesley Kenney but would fall to Decatur 8-2.

 

Tennis:  Both Boys and Girls Tennis teams traveled to the Peachtree Tennis Center to take on region foe McIntosh this week.  Both squads came away with wins as the Girls improved to 11-4 with a 4-1 win while the Boys squad swept McIntosh 5-0 to improve to 13-2.

 

Golf:  The Girls Golf team would go 1-1 in head-to-head play this week as well as finish 2nd overall at the St. Pius Par 3 tournament.  Woodward would fall to Starr’s Mill 92-85 but rebound later in the week to defeat Westminster 104-92.  The Boys squad played in the very tough Boys High School Invitational which took place at the challenging Atlanta Athletic Club course.  Walker Sullivan shot a 75 while John Edge and Stephen Ahnrud each added rounds of 76 for a 227 total as the Boys finished an impressive 4th overall.

Track:  The Boys and Girls Track and Field teams had two meets during the week.  The Boys team would finish 2nd at a four team meeting featuring Woodward, Marist, Lovett and Westminster while the Girls would finish 3rd.  Over the weekend both teams would compete in the rain shortened McEachern Invitational.  The Boys squad finished 3rd overall while the Girls team finished 10th.

 

The Week of April 7th – April 12th

 

Lacrosse:  Woodward Academy’s Girls Lacrosse team won a pair of games during the week.  The Lady War Eagles improved to 9-3 with a 13-7 victory over Darlington and followed that up with a 17-10 win over Holy Innocents.  Against Darlington Woodward was lead by Ann Bates with 6 goals and an assist, Julia Genz with 4 goals, and Rachel Neill with 1 goal and 1 assist.  Ann Bates would also score 6 goals against Holy Innocents with Julia Genz and Rachel Neill adding 2 goals each and an assist.  Also contributing were Ginny Hanger with 2 goals, Molly Bates with 1 goal and 3 assists, and Amanda Mallen with 2 assists.  The Lady War Eagles currently stand at 10-3 overall.

 

The Boys Lacrosse team split a pair of games during the week.  Woodward played host to Pace Academy in a tough matchup were the War Eagles would fall 7-3.  Woodward would bounce right back against Marist two days later with a 9-5 win.  The Boys team now stands at 8-5 on the season.

 

Track:  Both teams continue to prepare for the Region 2-AAAA Meet.  Woodward Academy will host both the Girls and the Boys meet.  The Girls Region meet will be held April 19th and 21st while the Boys Region meet will be held April 26th and 28th.

 

Soccer:  The Girls Varsity Soccer team had a tough week as they went 0-2, losing both games by 1 goal margins.  Woodward would fall to Marist 1-0 and the suffered a 2-1 loss to Westminster.  The Lady War Eagles have now lost four matches decided by a single goal or in penalty kicks.

 

The Boys Soccer team also took on Marist and Westminster during the week.  The Boys squad would lose both games falling to Marist 3-0 before losing to Westminster 2-0. 

 

Tennis:  The Girls and Boys Tennis teams finished up their regular season schedules with matches against Marist and Westminster.  The Girls team would go 1-1 on the week defeating Marist 3-2 before falling to Westminster 3-2.  The Boys team would sweep the two team defeating Marist 5-0 and Westminster 4-0.  The Girls end the regular season12-5 while the Boys finish 15-3.  Both teams will now prepare for the Region 2-AAAA Tournament.

 

Baseball:  The War Eagles Baseball team had a busy week with three games on the schedule, two of which would go into extra innings.  The War Eagles would lose their first Region 2-AAAA game of the year on Monday with a 10-4 loss to Starr’s Mill.  The War Eagles then defeated McIntosh in a come from behind win. The Woodward overcame an 8-0 lead by McIntosh to win 13-12 in 8 innings.  Andrew Cadger, David Pierce and Brandon Miller all pitched for the War Eagles. Tommy Corbin was 5-5 at the plate and Brandon Miller hit a 2 run homer in the eighth inning to tie the game before Tommy Corbin scored from third on a pass ball.  Woodward finished the week with a 12-9 win over Union Grove, again in extra innings.  The War Eagles were able to score 12 runs as Blake Hudson went 2-4 with two doubles, Brandon Miller went 3-4 with a double, Delino Deshields went 3-5 with two ground rule doubles, William Arnold went 2-4 and Johnny Blankenship went 1-3 with a sac and a single for 3 RBI 's.

 

Golf:  The Lady War Eagle Golf team traveled to White County for the White County Invitational.  Woodward would record their first 1st place finish of the year with Haley Zagoria also taking the individual title.

The Boys Varsity Golf team continued their strong play as they recorded a 150-180 win over defending state champion Lovett.  John Edge shot an impressive 2-under par 34 while Walker Sullivan added a 1-under par 35 to lead Woodward.  Also playing well were Jordan Redd (40), Matt Kelly (41) and Russell Owen (41).

 

The Week of April 14th – April 19th

 

Tennis:  The Boys and Girls Tennis teams played host to the Region 2-AAAA Tennis Tournament during the week. The Boys team would finish as Region Champions as they defeated McIntosh in the finals 4-1.  The Girls team finished as Region Runner-up as they lost 3-2 to Starr’s Mill in the championship match.  Both teams will now advance to the State Tournament.

 

Track:   The Girls Track team competed in the Region 2-AAAA Track meet hosted at Woodward Academy.  The Girls finished 5th overall in a very tough region.  The Boys team is up next as they will compete in their region meet on April 26th and 28th.

 

Lacrosse:  The Varsity Girls Lacrosse team improved their record to 11-3 and 4-0 in the area with an 18-3 victory over South Cobb. Woodward was lead by 6 goals and 1 assist from Ann Bates, 3 goals and 1 assist from Camille Spalding, 4 assists from Kathleen Sherali, and 2 goals and 2 assists from Julia Genz.  Woodward would follow up that win with a tie against a very tough Harrison squad, 10-10.  The Girls team concluded the week with a 17-1 win over Rockdale County.  The team was lead by Ann Bates with 7 goals, Julia Genz with 3 goals, Ginny Hanger with 2 goals and 1 assist, Anna Ford with 2 goals, Kathleen Sherali and Rachel Neill who each had a goal and 2 assists, Camille Spalding who had a goal and an assist, and Molly Bates with 2 assists. On defense, Caroline Luke made 7 saves to hold Rockdale to one goal.

 

The Boys team would go 1-2 during the week as they played two of the toughest teams in the state.  Woodward would fall to Alpharetta 10-0 and McIntosh 10-2.  Both teams are currently ranked in the top 10 in the state with Alpharetta holding down a #2 ranking.  The War Eagles would rebound on Saturday however as they defeated Newnan 10-7.  The War Eagles have locked up a playoff spot and will finish the regular season schedule against Hillgrove.

 

Soccer:  The Boys Soccer team had busy week as they concluded their regular season with three games in three days.  Woodward would easily handle Westlake winning 8-0 but would suffer losses to Starr’s Mill 3-0 and Chattahoochee 7-1.  Woodward will now prepare for the State Playoffs as the #3 seed from Region 2-AAAA.

 

The Girls Soccer team also played three games in the same number of days and came away with a perfect 3-0 record.  The Lady War Eagles would have little trouble with Westlake winning 15-0.  Woodward would then finish a game that had previously been suspended due to weather against Starr’s Mill.  Shannon Weathington would score the lone goal as Woodward would win 1-0 and lock up the #3 seed from Region 2-AAAA for the State Playoffs.  Woodward would finish the regular season with a 1-0 win over Grady.

Baseball:  The War Eagle Baseball team would continue their winning ways as they would easily handle Westlake (14-1) and Banneker (12-0).  Against Banneker the War Eagles were lead by Mike Lavelle throwing a no hitter for the 5 inning game. The offense was sparked by Will Madden 2-3, Delino Deshields 2-3, Andrew Cadger 2-4, William Arnold 2-3, Johnny Blankenship 2-3, and Will Dietrichs with a homer.

 

The Week of April 21st – April 26th

 

Golf:  The Varsity Girls Golf team took on the dark horse roll and defeated Region power Starr's Mill twice in 4 days to finish second in the Region 2-AAAA Golf championships at Wolf Creek. The Lady War Eagles runner-up status qualifies them for the AAAA State Tournament on May 5th in Augusta. Senior Laurie King fired her best 2 rounds of her career to finish 7th in Columbus with an 83, and 3rd in the region with an 82. The depth of Chloe Bootstaylor, Haley Zagoria, and Felicity Lloyd-Jones helped solidify Woodward's 2nd place Region finish.

 

The Boys Golf team took home the Region 2-AAAA Championship with an impressive score of 310, eight shots better than second place Starr’s Mill.  Low scores for Woodward were John Edge 3rd overall with a 75, Walker Sullivan (76), Jordan Redd (79) and Matt Kelly (80).  The Boys team will also advance to the State Tournament on May 5th in Evans, GA.

 

Baseball:  The Varsity Baseball team solidified their hold atop the 2-AAAA Region Standings with a 3-0 week.  On Monday the War Eagles defeated Northgate by a score of 8-1. Andrew Cadger was the winning pitcher and Will Madden pitched 3 innings in relief. The offense was sparked by Delino DeShields 4-4 with a double and a homer.  Next the War Eagles defeated Whitewater 8-4 behind the pitching of David Pierce and Will Dietrich as well as Blake Hudson’s homer in the 6th.  On Friday Woodward defeated Fayette County 12-5 to move to 19-3 overall.  The offense was sparked by Delino DeShields 2-4 with a homer, Blake Hudson 2-4, Tommy Corbin 2-4 with a home run, and William Arnold 2-4 with a triple and a homer.

 

Soccer:  The Varsity Girls Soccer team won their first game of the AAAA State Playoffs on Wednesday.  Woodward traveled to Upson-Lee and came home with an 8-0 win.  Woodward will now play at Greenbrier High School on Wednesday, April 30th.  Game time is 6:00 PM.

 

The Boys Soccer team traveled to Twelve Oaks Stadium on Tuesday in the 1st Round of the State Playoffs.  The War Eagles defeated Forest Park 4-3 and now will advance to the 2nd round.  Woodward will play on Tuesday, April 29th at Greenbrier.  Game time is 6:00 PM.

Tennis:  Both the Boys and Girls Tennis teams entered the AAAA State Tournament.  The Girls team would beat Dutchtown and Bainbridge in the first two rounds 5-0 while the Boys teams would won their only match of the week 5-0 over Upson-Lee.
