Policies

Note: This is the same information that is sent to parents in the Welcome to Woodward Academy School Year 2008-2009 packet during the summer.

After School Activities:

All students in grades Pre-kindergarten through Twelve should promptly leave the campus upon dismissal unless they are involved in After School Care, have been given

permission to remain by the principal of their school, or are participating in athletic, artistic, detention hall, or study hall activities

After School Care (Prekindergarten through Sixth Grade):

Students enrolled in grades Pre-kindergarten through sixth who cannot be picked up immediately after dismissal must be enrolled in the Woodward Academy After School Care Program which operates until 6:00 p.m. on each school day. Parents wishing to avail themselves of this service may secure applications on Registration Day. Please be aware that After School Care will not be available on December 19, 2008, or May 29, 2009.

Attendance Policy:

Woodward Academy maintains that student attendance is an important part of student success; therefore, the school strongly discourages absences except in the cases of emergency or illness. A parental note should accompany the student upon the return to school after an absence. Please be aware that cumulative absences of twenty or more may result in loss of academic credit.

Books and Uniforms:

We will issue books and locks to all students in grades PK-6.  Middle School and Upper School students must purchase their textbooks through MBSDirect.  Middle School and Upper School students can also purchase locks at the Campus Store as well. (More about uniforms)

Bus Information:

Detailed bus information was mailed under separate cover.  Students who ride the bus in the afternoon must wait in the bus departure area until departure time.  Only students scheduled for afternoon activities or involved in After School Care are allowed to remain on campus and depart by the 6:00 PM. bus.  Students are not allowed to leave campus at any time during the school day including during times they are waiting for the bus.  It is possible to ride the bus intermittently, and to do so students must purchase bus passes from either the principal’s office or from the Academy Business Office located in Carlos Hall. (Student Transport page)

Please find enclosed (in the back-to-school packet) the Academy calendar for 2008- 2009. For the most up-to-date listing of events, activities, sport events, etc., please go to the Woodward Academy website at www.woodward.edu. This calendar can also be downloaded to your personal outlook calendar. See instructions on Woodward calendar webpage.

The student directory is now available to all Woodward parents on Edline and updated monthly during the school year. A printed directory will no longer be distributed; however, you will be able to print a copy directly from Edline as often as you like with the most up-to-date information.

Car Pool Information:

Information concerning carpool possibilities may be obtained after July 14, 2008, from the Student Transportation Office at 404.765.4520.

Conference Days:

Students in Grades Pre-Kindergarten through Six will not attend school on Thursday, October 23, 2008 or Thursday, April 16, 2009. These days have been set aside as
Conference Days. Your child’s teacher will give you additional information at the beginning of school. The elementary divisions will not provide After School Care on these two dates; however, supervision is available for students in each division during individual conference times.

Discipline:

Woodward Academy considers the safety and well being of all members of the community to be of utmost importance, and the Academy expects students to adopt an attitude of respect for all members of that community. It is the responsibility of students and parents to familiarize themselves with the rules and regulations handbook (links on the right navigation) provided by the individual schools. In particular, Woodward Academy cannot and will not tolerate a student’s using, possessing, or being under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs on campus, at school functions or on school sponsored trips.

Additionally, students may not bring to school any item which in any way could be considered a weapon. Further, the Academy will not tolerate actions or statements of a threatening or harassing nature towards any member of the community. Students who engage in any such behaviors involving drugs or alcohol, weapons violations, bullying, or threatening or harassing behavior or statements are subject to disciplinary action up to and including permanent dismissal from the school. Students and parents should also be aware that Woodward Academy does not operate under an Open Campus philosophy. Once students have arrived on campus, they are not allowed to depart until after their last scheduled activity.

Health Forms:

Students who enroll in any school in the State of Georgia forthe first time, by law, must have the Immunization Form 3231 in their school record prior to the time they begin classes. This form may be obtained from your child's physician, or from your county Health Department. The Georgia Department of Human Resources has added new items to the requirements for immunization for school attendance, effective July 2, 2007. (Please go tot the Health Service page for more...)

Students will need to meet these requirements for the 2007-2008 school year. A summary of the new school requirements, according to grade level affected, are listed on the back page of this document.

Because of physical education (when it was sent out, see link above for the online version), dance classes and the many sports and extracurricularactivities that Woodard Academy offers, we require that all students have an annual physical evaluation. We encourage the physical to be completed between the months of May - August to be current for the upcoming school year. Annual physicals completed throughout the school year are acceptable but must be kept up to date in the infirmary. The updated physical should be forwarded on or before the annual anniversary date, once every twelve months.

I. D. Card:

All Middle and Upper School students are required to possess and carry a school I.D. card. It is possible to secure the I.D. card from the Upper School Dean of students Office and from the Middle School Principal’s Office beginning August 6, 2008.

Snow Days:

In the case of inclement weather, please tune to WSB-TV, WAGA-TV, WXIA-TV, WSB radio (750 AM), Peach radio (95 FM), or WNNX 99-X (99.7 FM) for information regarding whether Woodward Academy will be open or closed for the day. You may also check the Woodward Academy website at www.woodward.edu. If the school is open during inclement weather, parents should use their judgment as to whether their child should attend on that day. Absences due to inclement weather will be considered excused. (Weather page)

Occasionally, inclement weather may develop after students have arrived at school, and it may be nenecessary to close school early or to delay student departure from campus. In such cases, we will post up to the minute information on the Academy website at www.woodward.edu.
